Huipiles and cortes (skirts)
The Maya woman's skirt (refrajo) is commonly referred to as a 'corte'. Corte comes from the verb cortar, meaning 'to cut'. The fabric is a cut (or length) of cloth which is typically handwoven on a foot powered treadle loom. Though the styles vary, the most common are floor length and tube shaped, worn tightly wrapped around the hips and secured at the waist with a sash.
