RAINFOREST MASKS

The Embera inhabit remote villages in the Rainforest of Panama near  the Colombian border. Traditional masks are used by Shamans in healing rituals or before hunts to ensure good luck. Masks are made from two types of jungle palms using both sewing and knotting techniques. Fibers are hand-dyed with with colors derived from bark, flowers, plants, tubers and wood shavings. The masks made by the Embera are unique and highly prized for the originality of design
